BASEBALL'S ALL STAR VOTING HAS BECOME A FARCE

Many many years ago, Major league Baseball decided to get the fans involved by allowing them to vote for players to participate in the season's all star game.  From the very beginning I thought that was a bad idea and this year more than ever I am proven right.  I always felt that the all stars selected was to be a reward or recognition for the year they were having.  Instead ,  the votes were being cast for big name players regardless of the season they were having.  In other words, a popularity contest.
Players at the end of their careers were getting votes simply because, even the average fan was familiar with the names of the players who had created big accomplishments during their playing days.  Once again, a popularity contest.  So far, this years voting process has gotten worse, at least from the American League side.  Kansas City Royal fans have stuffed the ballot boxes to vote for every one of their teams players.  Unless things change in the next couple of weeks, we are going to see the National League all stars basically playing the Kansas City Royals, as 8 of the starting 9 positions are Royal's players.  I doubt very much that when baseball wanted to get the fans involved, this is not the result they intended to achieve.  Thanks to the Kansas City fans, today's process of voting has become a farce.  Game day announcers do not help in this matter either, when during each game they are encouraging their fans to get out and vote for their respective teams players.  Before the league got fans involved, the all star votes were cast by the players for who they felt were having a season worthy of being on the team.  They were not allowed however to vote for players on their own team for the simple reason to take away  any bias that might be involved.  Players should be recognized for their seasons accomplishments to be on the all star team, so at the very least give the voting process back to the players and get rid of this unfair and ridiculous popularity contest.

ITs like all those other TV competitions that use fan voting. It becomes more about everything else except the talent. Fan voting = Big Joke in sports related events

My kids don't mind it but for the past many years I've lost more and more interest in all-star games

the game doesn't mean anything so it really doesn't matter who picks the teams I guess

If that's the deal then they need to call it the Fan Game, NOT the All-Star game.

all-star selection should be based on league ratings and then voted on by coaches, other players etc. fan selection doesn't equal an all-star selection

Its not really meant to be competitive. Its more for the fans to have fun picking their favorite players to see them play.
