A FEW THOUGHTS FROM THE WORLD OF SPORTS

From time to time we like to share a few thoughts  from the world of sports.  With the NBA taking a few days off for their all star game, this is probably a good time for random thinking.

ALL STAR TEAMS.........Although it is a good public relations move to get fans involved in picking all star teams, I feel players should be voted on only by players and coaches, without  voting for  their own teammates.   Fan voting has become too much of a popularity contest, while players and coaches know their competition better than anyone else.

ELIMINATE THE DUNK SHOT..........I will admit that I enjoy watching a good dunk shot as much as anyone.  I watched a college game recently and they were giving the half time stats.  They stated that a player had gone 5 for 5 from the field and was the leading scorer at that point.  I realized at that point that the player in question had all of his points from dunk shots.  Just made me wonder how talented some players would actually be if they had to shoot a real shot away from the basket.  I am sure the shooting percentages would decline.

PETE ROSE..........Based on his on the field performance,  Pete Rose should no doubt be voted into the Hall Of Fame.  Rose's gambling activities had nothing to do with what he accomplished as a player.  His stats were earned  through hard play and dedication to the game.  Unlike some, who needed some performance drug, Rose's accomplishments were achieved without.  We have players today like Braun and A Rod who will continue to make their millions of dollars after lying about their PED use  and cheating the game of baseball.  It is true that Rose lied about his gambling, but in comparison to some others (Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Clemens, Braun, A Rod) Rose never cheated the game itself.  Seems maybe Rose being banned from baseball was a bit harsh and it is time he can be reinstated when you compare him to a few of the mentioned others.

LEGALIZE SPORTS GAMBLING..........When will the state governments get wise and legalize sports betting in their states??  Billions of dollars are being lost in revenue each year.  The act of sports betting is going to take place whether it is legal or not so why not cash in on something that will never go away.  Many states allow casinos, lotteries, and horse racing as various forms of gambling and feel this is ok.  I have nothing against any of these, but I think I would rather have my 11 to 10 odds betting on my favorite team as opposed to my chances of winning at today's legalized
forms of gambling.  New NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver has come out in favor of legalizing sports betting,  Maybe he can get the ball rolling.

JACKIE ROBINSON WEST LITTLE LEAGUE..........By now I am sure everyone has heard about the little league baseball team from Chicago being stripped of their title as USA champions due to the use of a few illegal players that lived outside the area from which the team was from.  Cheating goes on today in sports, but it is truly sad when it reaches the levels of 12 year olds.  No, it wasn't the players who cheated, but a few adults who would stoop to any level to win a game or a title.  The team was the first all black team to win the USA championship and they were honored at the White House by, President Obama in recognition of their accomplishment.  After being stripped of the title, the Las Vegas team who finished second was named the new champion.  Sad to say but there are no winners here at all.  The Vegas team will never know if they are a true champion and the Chicago team will never know if they could have won without the services of the 2 or 3 illegal players.
The Chicago team had 13 players on their roster.  I feel bad for the 2 or 3 players that did not get on that team because their spots were taken by outsiders  Those young players never had a chance to live the dream of the Little League World Series because a few adults had them replaced.  A mother of one of the players questioned if the investigation would have taken place if the team was all white.
The Reverend, Jesse Jackson brought up the race issue as well.  Do not go there people.  This has nothing to do with race, but simply a few adults who will go to any length to  win at the expense of young baseball players.

NCAA..........I cannot be myself without my usual comment about the National CROOKED Athletic Association.  The time has come to FIRE MARK EMMERT and any of his cronies that support him.

As always, feel free to comment on these topics or anything you want to share with us.  It is always good to hear from you.

I'm all for the sports gambling. I got a relative living in Nevada and he can bet on games whenever he wants. I think everyone should have that option

If MLB can let steroid users back on field, they can let Pete Rose in to the hall of fame

MLB has used the Pete Rose incident as this iconic moment in baseball and to make him the example of what happens when you do something wrong. MLB has used his name so much that they should be paying Rose $1,000 every time an announcer, broadcaster, or affiliate mentions his name in relation to "the gambling incident"

I think the same. I don't see any reason why they don't legalize it.

Getting rid of the dunk would definately change the game. IT would be interesting though.

The NCAA causes more problems than they fix. Something better should be put in place

I think the same way about the allstar selection, If a guy is in the news the fans will pick him even if the news is that the guy just got arrested, It doesn't make sense

I heard an ESPN reporter say Bosch will do the time for supplying athletes with performance enhancers. I knew he would go down for that.

I agree, eliminating the dunk would make the game more challenging in a positive way.

all star teams should definitely be picked by baseball managers and personal. it would eliminate the popularity contest thing with fans

Its a shame that cheating is being taught at a little league level

Having all star teams picked by coaches would probably suck for the fans but would make for more competitive all star games all around
